2015 One Book, One Community Selection: Legacy of the Stone by Karlajean Becvar

The goal of a Community Wide Book Read is to encourage residents in the area to read the same book at the same time.  This year’s selection is
the recently released Book 3 of the Firestorm Chronicles, “Legacy of the Stone”. This is a continuation of Addie's time-traveling adventure just after the Great Hinckley Fire.  Join us for a FREE Special Event on Thursday, April 30th at the Hinckley Fire Museum at 6:00 pm.  Karlajean Bevar will be on hand to discuss her novel..  Books are available at the Community Education Office for $10.


NEW!!!  Driver Education in the Classroom & Behind the Wheel
Hinckley-Finlayson Community Education now provides classroom and behind-the-wheel driver’s education instruction for students ages 15 and older outside the normal school day.
State law requires that each student completes 30 hours of the classroom portion of Driver Education and students must be at least 15 years of age on or before the date of their last class.  Our classes last for three hours on a ten day schedule and are taught by teachers with both a teaching license and a driver education certificate.
Behind the Wheel time (6 hours) will be scheduled between the instructors and students, once a blue card has been received. 
Contact HF Community Education 320-384-7325 to get on the list for the next available class.  Classroom portion currently scheduled Saturday mornings 8-11 am & Monday Evenings from 5-8 pm for 5 weeks.

Home Stretch Workshop

Central MN Housing Partnership

Free yourself from some of the complications and stress of buying a home by participating in a Home Stretch Workshop.In one day, you will learn about qualifying for a mortgage, financing a home, budget

and credit issues, real estate, the closing process, basic home maintenance and affordable mortgage products that may be available to first-time homebuyers.  Some affordable mortgage products, first-time homebuyer products, and government loans may require a buyer to receive a Home Stretch certificate.


Registration is required and participants will receive a completion certificate at the end of the day.

ServSafe – Food Managers

ServSafe is a nationally recognized food safety course. The course meets the Food Manager Certification requirement for the State of MN and WI. Content include the need and benefits of an effective safety plan, how food becomes contaminated, how to control these risks, and protect your business, employment, food and customers. Participants will test for a ServSafe Certification. Class size: 12-25.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding

This newly-updated course trains lifeguards to act with speed and confidence in emergency situations both in and out of the water. Cost includes:  Instruction, Red Cross Fee, CPR Mask/Whistle, and textbook.  (If you digitally, download your book a $30 discount will be given at the time of the class.)

Lifeguard Review Course

The American Red Cross Lifeguard Review course is designed to review all of the lifeguarding skills and core knowledge points required to recertify in lifeguarding. Topics covered in the course include patron surveillance, rescue skills, victim assessment, First Aid, CPR-AED, and care for head, neck and spinal injuries. A Resuscitation Mask is required. Please bring your Manual for this class or download e-book format using a laptop or tablet.

The hallways of the HFHS are available to walkers for FREE.  You must stop by or call the Community Education Office to be put on the walker list.  There is no walking on the days when school isn’t in session.

Men, do you need a place to get a little exercise? Join us for an evening of basketball.  There is no registration required.  Just bring tennis shoes and show up to have a good time.  This is an on-going event, so remember to add it to your weekly schedule. No High School students allowed.

MHSRC 55+ Driver Improvement Class - Refresher Course

For those that are 55 yrs and over and have taken the initial class before.  The class will explore changes in laws, the latest vehicle technology, and provide you with easy-to-use defensive driving tips.  In addition, we will explore traffic safety and accident prevention. The classroom course allows for a 10% reduction in your insurance rate (check with your local insurance agent). Please pre-register at least one week prior. The local insurance office does provide refreshments and door prizes. A minimun of 12 are needed for the class

Mother-Son Adventure ---FULLL---WAITING LIST
Here is your chance for some hands-on Mother/Son time.  Meet us at the Audubon Center of the North Woods to participate in “Survivor: North Woods”.  Here you will work in small groups to try and survive in the great outdoors.  You will be building a shelter, starting a fire and packing survival gear in this 3 hour adventure.  Class size is limited.

Come and learn the basics of proper stretching, basic rolls, walkovers, cartwheels, and round offs in this entry level tumbling class. The class will be broken up by appropriate skills. Beginners are first time in a tumbling class and Experience has attended a gymnastics class   Class size will be limited to 12.

Safe Sitter - Babysitter Training
First Light Health
Safe Sitter is an instructional course designed for ages 11 years and older  who are seeking proper training to become babysitters. During the all-day course, students listen, practice and role play to learn about a variety of topics including:
  • Safety precautions
  • CPR and care for a choking infant or child
  • Recognizing emergencies
  • Calling for emergency help
The course also covers the basics of child care, including how to feed and diaper an infant and behaviors to expect when dealing with each age group. Parents are invited to attend the graduation ceremony to recognize the Safe Sitters. Students must bring a bag lunch.

Junior Jaguar Golf Clinic at Grand National 

Come learn the lifetime sport of golf!  Etiquette and golf fundamentals will be covered.  Learn how to play golf safely and have fun at the golf course!  Each golfer will receive a free sleeve of golf balls from Grand National Golf Course. Bring your own clubs if you have, but we have youth clubs available to use.  Contests and Prizes on the last day of the clinic.
