Welcome to Ms. Schmidt's Second Grade
Homework folders should be brought to school every day. Students should read for 20 minutes each night and record their reading time in their Reading for Success logs. Watch for "Remind" messages, emails and notes/homework sheets coming home in homework folders. Thank you! |
readingThis year second grade will be using the Reading Wonders curriculum during our literacy block. Students will have the opportunity to do Independent Reading at their own reading level, work in a Guided Reading Group with me, practice building oral reading fluency during buddy reading, work on skills/strategies during word work time, and enjoy listening to classic children's literature during our read aloud time. Homework this year will include a "Reading for Success" folder with a requirement of 20 minutes of reading every night at home!

mathThis year we are using a new math curriculum called Everyday Math. This curriculum closely aligns with the Minnesota Math Standards and includes a student journal, math tools, iPad activities, and games. At home you can practice counting money, telling time, addition and subtraction facts, using measuring tools, and writing to explain "how" you solved a problem.

Unit TimeDuring Unit Time we will be focusing on Second Grade Science and Social Studies Standards, as well as, integrating writing during this time. Students will enjoy such things as Life Cycle activities, Geography and Mapping activities, and Weather activities and information. We are part of a Como Zoo Residency Program this year where we will visit the zoo twice and the zoo will come to see us twice during the school year. In the spring we will also be going to the Children's Museum in St. Paul.
