School Board Member Orientation and Development
POLICY # 215
I. Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to encourage members of the school board to participate in training and professional development activities, in order to maintain a well informed school board.
II. General Statement of Policy
A. Following election or appointment and prior to assumption of office, new school board members are encouraged to attend all board meetings/functions and may receive pertinent materials.
B. The Superintendent and Board Chairperson shall meet with new school board members to review the board’s functions, policies, procedures, pertinent materials, and discuss the roles of board members.
C. New school board members will be provided the opportunity and encouragement to attend the orientation and training sessions provided by the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA). Phase I is encouraged and Phase II is required by Minnesota statute.
D. All school board members are encouraged to participate in school board and related workshops and activities sponsored by local, state, and national school board associations, as well as in the activities of other educational groups.
E. School board members are expected to provide colleagues with information and materials of interest gathered at the various meetings and workshops.
F. Board members will be offered the opportunity to meet with school leadership in order to understand various roles in the school district. This may include: principals, head of buildings and maintenance, head cook, business manager, transportation supervisor, and Director of Technology and Media.
G. School board members will be reimbursed according to provisions set forth in School District policies for expenses incurred while attending meetings and conventions.

- Upon registering to run for office or applying for appointment- prospective members will be invited to meet with superintendent, tour schools, and attend board meetings.
- Upon election or appointment- members elect will be invited to attend all board meetings and functions, receive board materials, meet with Superintendent, register for Phase I and Phase II trainings, and meet with Board Chairperson.
- During first year on board new members will be invited to monthly meetings with Superintendent and/or Board Chair to go over role of the board, board goals, board accomplishments, and issues facing the school board.
