HINCKLEY-FINLAYSON PUBLIC SCHOOL ELEMENTARY
RETENTION POLICY
POLICY #513
Retention is sometimes considered as an option for students who are not meeting academic
performance expectations. The Hinckley-Finlayson Elementary School recognizes that while, in general, retention does not produce long term solutions to a student’s lack of academic progress, there are instances where retention is effective. The best candidates for retention include students who are relatively young as compared to their classmates, are smaller in size than their classmates, have average academic skills, have missed a considerable amount of school, and have parents who support retention. Each student will be considered for retention on an individual basis. Parents need to be informed early of the concerns with the students lack of progress as described by the following:
Fall Conference -The teacher informs the parents of the concerns with the student’s performance at conference or in a letter or phone call.
By December 1: The teacher brings the student’s name to the Problem solving team (PST) for assistance with development of interventions to address the student’s needs. The teacher informs the parents of the concerns with the student’s performance in a letter or phone call.
By February 1: The PST brings student’s name to the SST (student support team) for discussion regarding intervention results and/or possible retention. The SST will determine if there is a need for a special education assessment. The teacher is provided information on retention (see attached information) and completes the Light’s Retention Scale. Parents are contacted with regard to the intervention results and initial discussion of retention.
By March 1: The SST (including the child’s teacher) reviews data collected by the teacher and determines if enough data is available to make a decision. The teacher contacts parents regarding discussion of possible retention.
Spring Parent-Teacher Conf: The school (SST including the child’s teacher) makes a decision to retain the student. The principal sends a letter to the parents (see attached) informing them of the school’s decision to retain and process they may employ should they disagree with the school’s decision. If parents object to the school’s decision to have their child retained they may have the opportunity to schedule a conference with the Hinckley or Finlayson Elementary School Principal, the child’s teacher, and other involved staff.
