BUS DRIVER EVALUATION AND PROCEDURES

GENERAL PROCEDURES
In order to have a well trained, dedicated, and informed transportation staff all Hinckley-Finlayson schools, bus drivers shall have regular evaluations by the transportation director.
All conferences held under the provisions of these guidelines shall be conducted by the
Transportation Supervisor and/or Superintendent of Schools. The observations and conferences will be based on the “Bus Driver Evaluation Form”.
Each driver shall annually receive copies of all forms used and all procedures as a part of the Bus Driver Annual Memo, which will be furnished at the beginning of each school year.
DRIVING OBSERVATIONS
Written driving observation reports and evaluations shall be required for all drivers in their first and second years of service.
A conference shall be held within two working days of the observation in order that the
driver may receive the observation report and the comments, suggestions, and feedback of the supervisor. This conference may be held at another time if mutually agreed to by the driver and the supervisor.
Drivers with two or more years of experience will be formally evaluated every other year. This will be documented in writing. Observation and written evaluation can be required of any driver at the discretion of the Transportation Supervisor. These may be done in person (by the transportation director) or by viewing bus video.
EVALUATIONS
Each evaluation will include an observation conducted by the transportation director, completion of an evaluation sheet, a conference, and written evaluation.
On the evaluation form a rating will be indicated to be one of the following shown here with its definition:
Exceeds Expectations- performance meets all criteria for “meets expectations” and the driver goes above and beyond expectations in several areas.
Meets Expectations - performance is at an acceptable level as indicated by work being done in a competent manner.
Needs Improvement - performance demonstrates that improvement efforts must be put forth to meet employer expectations. Specific deficiencies and recommendations for improvement will be noted in the comment section.
Unsatisfactory - performance is at an unacceptable level.
The driver is expected to demonstrate the following personal and professional characteristics:
- Is tactful
- Shows enthusiasm
- Accepts suggestions and criticisms
- Has a positive attitude
- Presents appropriate appearance
- Maintains confidentiality
- Is dependable
- Shows flexibility
- Displays initiative
- Is punctual
- Has strong communication skills, including positive etiquette, data privacy, and prompt communication with co-workers and families
The driver's attendance record will be reported as part of the evaluation.
The driver may wish to add his/her comment to the evaluation form.
-The driver may furnish comments during the conference.
-The driver who wishes to draft comments after the conference may do so providing they are submitted within two working days.
-The supervisor should establish a procedure whereby the school district's copies do not
leave his/her possession during the time taken to provide comments.
The employment recommendation – dismissal from employment can be recommended by the Transportation Director or Superintendent if the driver’s performance is unsatisfactory in multiple areas.
